A syllabus is a contract between you and the instructor. A syllabus will often tell you what is expected, when assignments are due, when exams are scheduled, and how to contact your instructor. This information could also be provided in the online learning platform, Desire to Learn (D2L). In high school, the teachers will lead you through all the homework and due dates. In college, the instructors post the assignments 鈥 often for the entire semester 鈥 and expect you to be prepared and turn them in by the due dates. Buy an organizer, an assignment notebook, a big wall calendar 鈥 whatever it takes for you to know when assignments are due. Make sure you keep tabs on where you stand in class, as well as your overall academic progress. Take advantage of available tools, such as a (clicking on "additional calculator" at the bottom will give the option of seeing what you need to earn in a class(es) to raise your current GPA). Also, save time by utilizing your myKish portal to search and register for classes, view your progress/grades, pay your bill, view financial aid information, or print your class schedule or unofficial transcript all from home.
Make sure you know when the class starts and arrive at least 10 minutes early. You risk losing critical information that may pertain to homework or tests if you are late.
Make it a priority to use your professor鈥檚 office hours. Office hours are created especially for students. Appointments are not necessary during this time and students are encouraged to drop in. This is the best time to build a relationship, ask questions, or get help from your instructor. Seeing your instructor frequently can pay off. Instructors learn very fast which students care about the class and are serious about their education. If the instructor gets to know you, there is also an opportunity for them to provide you with a letter of recommendation or reference letter.
Visit the Tutoring Center in office location A1100 or call 815-825-9377, where we offer FREE tutoring for our students in math, chemistry, physics, biology, computer science, and many other subjects. Just stop by and ask! The Tutoring Center also offers a Writing Lab where you can receive assistance writing papers in any class. Stop in at any time to pick up a tutoring schedule. Another idea: form study groups, connect with peers in your class, or talk to the instructor.
This is the person who will help you with adding or dropping courses, scheduling classes, and deciding your career pathway. They can help with career planning, transfer advising, and personal counseling. This person is a key resource for you 鈥 and should be the person you turn to with any academic issues or conflicts.
